What is your opinion of Permeable Resin Bound Paving?

June 28, 2023

You may have heard of a type of resin driveway which allows water to pass through it. Well this is the resin bound paving. Unlike the resin bonded surfacing which is not permeable owing to its non-porous surface, resin bound solutions have a porous surface and this comes with enormous benefits.

Permeable Resin Bound Paving

Resin bound paving is installed by mixing the desired aggregate stones with a UV resistant resin in a forced action mixer. The mix is then trowelled down onto the already prepared surface and left to cure. Within 6 hours, you can confidently walk on the surface while vehicles would need to wait at least 24 hours before they can drive on it.

Permeability of Resin Bound Surfaces

The surface of a resin bound installation is smooth, flat, flexible and of course porous. This means that after rainfall, you are not in any risk of flash flooding or water puddles forming on the driveway surface.

However, for a resin bound installation to be fully permeable, its base has to be made with a permeable material. To achieve this, we recommend an MOT type 3 subbase such as an open graded tarmac.

You may have heard of the term SuDS. But if you have not, this is an acronym for Sustainable Urban Drainage System. This is a system where it is expected that installed flooring will help with water drainage rather than overwhelm the existing drainage channels. What this means in effect is that, the UK government favours surfaces which will allow water to drain through them over others which will channel water to existing drainages.

Not only does this system help to curb flash flooding, it also traps environmental pollutants in the driveway so that they do not cause problems for wildlife. Additionally, waste water going into treatment works will reduce significantly. This is also why you do not require a UK planning permission to install a resin bound system as you would if you were installing the non-porous resin bonded paving.

Other benefits of a Permeable Resin Bound Paving

In addition to what has been mentioned above, there are other advantages that come with installing a resin bound paving.

  • With a permeable resin bound paving, you will save yourself some maintenance and repair costs. How does this happen? When water remains on your driveway, overtime it begins to weaken the entire structure and the driveway eventually begins to show cracks and fail. But with a resin bound paving, damage caused by pools of water is largely eliminated.

  • They serve as a filter for pollutants. Unlike in the case of a resin bonded driveway or other traditional non-permeable surfaces such as concrete, where an additional drainage channel has to be installed which channels not only water but also other pollutants with it into the environment, pollutants are trapped on the resin bound paving surface thus acting as a filter.

  • Furthermore, having a permeable resin bound system helps to make drainage systems in cities more efficient. At the same time, they encourage biodiversity and make the quality of air in the environment fresher and cleaner.

  • Additionally, you will also save yourself the resources you would have used to construct a secondary drainage channel.

Contrastingly, it must be said that to have a well installed resin bound paving of the highest quality, you may not really be able to undertake it as a DIY project. It is always advisable to have experts do the installation for you. Therefore, if you are looking to do the installation by yourself, you either have to rethink that or install another type of driveway.

Also, because pollutants are trapped onto the surface, it can make the surface slippery overtime and so impact on the anti-slip property of the driveway. Therefore, you have to ensure adequate cleaning of the driveway, pathway or patio surface with a power or jet wash at least twice a year to prevent buildup of stains and debris.
