How Long Before You Can Park On Resin Driveway?
The use of resin for outdoor flooring is becoming even more common as more estate developers and homeowners are making use of resin for their driveways, patios, pathways, etc. Resin for driveways can either be resin bonded or resin bound driveway.
For the resin bonded driveway, a layer of resin is first poured on a suitable base and then aggregate stones are scattered unto the surface. These stones bond with the resin forming a textured surface.
The installation of the resin bound driveway on the other hand, is different. It involves mixing together the resin and aggregates with a force action mixer. The mix is then poured on a suitable base to form a smooth, seamless, durable, and fully permeable surface.
Benefits of installing Resin Driveway
There are many benefits that come with installing a resin bound surface. They are quick and easy to install especially where ground preparations are not needed. They are very attractive and visually appealing and also a durable flooring option.
Resin driveways also have excellent grip properties while also being anti-crack. Additionally, where a UV stable resin is used, they are also able to maintain their colours for years even on exposure to sunlight.
However, after installing a resin surfacing, you may be wondering how long before you are able to drive or park on your driveway.
How Long Before Parking On Driveway?
To know how long before you can park on a resin drive, you should first be aware of how long resin drive takes to dry. This is also known as the curing time. Your driveway should be allowed to cure completely before it can be subjected to any form of use either by humans or cars.
The factor that really determines how long it will take for your driveway to set and be ready for use is the temperature (atmospheric and ground temperature). That being said, driveways will set faster on a dry and sunny day than on a day in the cold months of winter. This invariably means that if you install your driveway on a hot sunny day, you won’t wait as long as on a cold day to drive or park on your driveway.
It is important that you install your driveway on a day where there is no chance of rainfall. Ideal temperatures should be at least 12oC. However, if you are laying your resin bound paving on a cold day, the ground temperature should be at least 5oC. This is to avoid penetrating damp that will give rise to swelling.
How Long Before You Can Make Use of Your Driveway
On a hot day in the summer months, your driveway should set fully between 6 to 12 hours. After this time, you can walk on your driveway. But to ensure that it is completely set and ready for use and to avoid any potential damage to your driveway by your car, you should wait at least 24 hours before you can drive or park in your driveway.
On the other hand, curing takes a much longer time if your driveway installation was done on a cold winter day. Therefore, you may have to wait for at least 48 hours before you can drive or park in your driveway.
In general, it is best you wait between 24 and 48 hours after completion of installation before you can drive and park on your resin bound driveway. For foot traffic, 6 to 8 hours is enough for an installation done on a hot sunny day while you can wait 12-24 hours if your installation was done on a cold day.
