The difference between Resin Bound Stone and Resin Bonded Stone

November 09, 2023

Resin bound stone and resin bonded stone may sound similar, but they serve distinct purposes within resin systems. If you're considering these materials for your project, it's crucial to understand their differences. In this comprehensive guide, we'll walk you through everything you need to know about resin bound and resin bonded stone.

If you are looking for a stylish, durable, low maintenance, versatile and visually appealing driveway that can transform the look of your outdoor space, you may have to consider resin. They are becoming very popular in recent years because of the edge they have over other surfacing options.

There are two types of resin surfaces-

  • Resin bond stone

  • Resin bonded stone

Both surfaces, though they sound similar, are not the same and differ in their mode of installation, appearance and ability to allow water to pass through them.

What is Resin Bound Stone?

Resin bound stone is sometimes referred to as trowelled surface or stoneblend. It is a resin surface that is installed by mixing natural aggregates with a resin mixture until every stone completely blends in the resin. The name “resin bound” comes from the fact that the aggregate stones are bound with the resin in a consistent mix.

The result is a smooth, durable, seamless surface that is crack resistant, anti-slip resistant, flexible and permeable. Resin bound surfaces are very durable and usually last longer than their resin bonded counterparts. One reason for this is that there are no loose stones and they are thicker in depth. Depending on the type of surface being laid, you can install at depths between 12 and 24mm.

Resin bound stone has a permeable surface which allows water to drain through it promoting easy absorption, runoff and preventing flooding. It also helps the environment as pollutants are trapped on the driveway surface rather than being carried into the environment where they may be harmful to wildlife. Permeability also ensures that existing water ways are not overwhelmed; it also reduces the amount of waste water that goes to the treatment works.

Additionally, if you choose to install a resin bound surface, you do not need a UK planning permission as this flooring system is SUDS compliant.

Resin bound stone has a smooth surface which makes them more versatile. They can be used for constructing pathways, patios, driveways, carparks, swimming pools, etc. Since there are no loose stones, you do not have to worry about stones being displaced from their positions over time. The smooth, seamless surface makes it a very safe option for children. Furthermore, it provides far greater access especially for ramps used by scooters, buggies, wheelchairs, pushchairs and other mobility devices.

Resin bound stone flooring is also crack resistant thanks to its flexibility. As long as they are well installed, you can be sure to enjoy your installation for more than two decades without any cracks.

These surfaces have a low maintenance requirement. They are installed such that weeds cannot grow through the surface. Cleaning a resin bound surface is very easy. All you need is a stiff bristled brush to get rid of dirt and debris on the surface. We also recommend Jet wash about 2 to 3 times a year to prevent build-up of dirt. Installing a resin bound stone flooring gives you good value for your money and saves you from constant repairs.

Resin bound stone installations are decorative, luxurious, stylish, elegant and visually appealing. There are so many design options available and a wide range of colours which can be expertly blended to give you a bespoke finish for your outdoor space. You have the liberty to customise your resin bound surface in any way you desire. You can also personalise your patios, pathways or driveway by incorporating logos, motifs, inscriptions, etc.

Resin Bound Stone Cost

The cost of installing this resin surfacing type is between £40-£70 per m2. However, where this is needed for site excavations and other ground preparation works, it may cost you up to £130 per m2.

What is Resin Bonded Stone?

Resin bonded Stone also referred to as “scattercoat” and sometimes “stonetop” is a type of resin surface which is installed by first laying resin on the driveway, path, patio or park area, and then scattering aggregate stones onto the resin where a bond is formed.

As a result of the installation procedure, the surface is not smooth but rather a textured surface. They have the appearance of loose gravel without loose stones. The stone aggregates are not completely covered in the resin. Because parts of the stones are exposed to the surface, they work loose and are displaced over time.

resin bonded stone

Resin bonded stone surfaces are not permeable like the resin bound type. Thus, water cannot pass through them which increases the likelihood of flash flooding. To avoid this, an additional drainage channel has to be constructed. Resin bonded stone surfacing is therefore not SUDS compliant.

Resin bonded stone driveways and have a rough, textured finish make them perfect for driveways and carparks. The textured finish allows for fantastic traction on the road, making this surface more suited for high traffic areas.

Just like the resin bound stone, there are a huge range of coloured aggregates available which adds to the versatility of bonded resin as they can match a variety of properties both rustic and modern. They can also be used for various decorative purposes in the outdoor space. Additionally, can also be customised to either complement the existing features of your building or to create a contrast.

Because of the exposed stones which come off after years of usage, resin bonded surfaces are naturally less durable than resin bound surfaces. However, they can serve for about 10-15 years.

Resin bonded surfaces are usually installed at a depth of about 4mm. While they can be used for a variety of purposes, they will not be very safe for use as a children's playground. The disabled may also find it difficult to drive their wheelchairs and other mobility devices on it.

Resin bonded Stone Cost

Resin bonded stone is relatively cheaper to install than the resin bound stone surface. They can be installed at an average cost of £26-£40 per m2. However, you will also have to bear in mind that you will have to install a secondary drainage channel if you do not have one already to channel water away from your home.

Aggregate stones are not exposed because they are completely bound to the resin in a uniformly blended mix with. Stones are exposed on the resin surface. These stones can be displaced over time which increases maintenance requirement and also reduces the beauty of the installation.
The depth of installation depends on the intended usage. While patios are installed at a depth of 12-15mm, pathways are installed at depths of 15-18mm while driveways are laid at depths of 18-24mm. Resin bonded stone is installed at a depth of 4mm.
